What Happens If You Fail Your Driving Test in Ohio?

Admin

If you’re 18 or older and fail your driving test in Ohio (maneuverability and/or road portion), you’ll need to take an Abbreviated Adult Driver Training course before you are eligible to test again. This only applies if you haven’t already taken a driver training course within the past year.

If you are under 18 and looking to take your road test again after failing it – you only need to wait 2 days, you would not need to take an adult abbreviated course.

Taking the Abbreviated Adult Program (18+) After a Failed Driving Test

Abbreviated adult driver training programs are designed to equip driver’s with the knowledge and skills needed to pass your road test and become a safe adult driver. To be eligible for a retest, you must complete a program that meets Ohio BMV’s  requirements. The course contains 2 key components:

1.) 4-Hour Class Instruction

As part of the course, you must complete 4 hours of classroom instruction. This can be done in either a traditional in-person setting or through an online course offered by a state-approved driving school. Many individuals choose the online option for its flexibility and convenience. Taking this class online allows you  to learn at your own pace from the comfort of your own home. This course will cover topics related to basic controls, traffic devices and laws, and the responsibilities of owning and maintaining a vehicle.

2.) Behind-the-Wheel Training

After completing the classroom or online instruction, Ohio’s BMV requires behind-the-wheel training. You have two options:

  • 4 hours with a certified driving instructor: This option offers focused guidance and personalized feedback from a professional. You’ll gain deeper insight into any areas that may have led to missed points on your previous test and receive targeted practice to address them. Additionally, your instructor will ensure you’re up-to-date on the latest Ohio driving laws regarding turns, stops, and proper hand positions. This comprehensive approach is highly recommended for maximizing your success on the driving test.
  • 24 hours with a licensed driver over 21: This option allows you to practice in familiar settings with someone you trust. Driving practice is limited to 4 hours per day and you must complete a 24-Hour Affidavit form BMV 5789 in order to fulfill Ohio’s state requirements. While acceptable, this approach does not provide the same level of focused feedback and targeted practice as instructor-led training.
